Hi, All these recipes sound good, but my german shepherd, (aren’t they the most wonderful dogs), has just had an allergy screening, and he is allergic to most foods in your recipes. His vet now has him on a duck/potato diet. I previously spoke with his vet about “people” food, and he believes that this food has many problems as well as commercial dog foods, and does not recommend I use it. What are you feelings on this. Thanks

Hi, I was just wondering about these dog food recipes. Are each of these recipes one meal for the day? Or is supposed to be enough for a couple of days or a week? If this is a meal to do for a day, I can see this getting really expensive.

These recipes are great. Another quick and easy one is a slight variation from a savory mince I do for the family. I use a combination of chicken and kangaroo mince cooked with garlic until brown then add an assortment of veggies and cook through a couple of eggs. I then add some cooked Pasta (my Shepherds prefer pasta to rice, how picky) and gravy. I make enough to last in a huge container in the fridge for a week. So easy and my dogs love it!

Thanks for the tips, I use Wellness, chicken for big dogs, this has all natural food in it, they use sweet potatoes and not white potatoes, I also get the wet food in Wellness, my german shepherds favorite is the New England Ventissson, she just loves it. I also, on weekends sometimes will cook a chicken stew and give it to the dogs, they love it, this last weekend I made Chicken and Dumplings, fresh carrots, celery onions and chicken thighs, with chicken broth and, homemade dumplings, they went crazy over it, so I will make it again for them. The chicken stew, has chicken thighs, carrots, potatoes, (or brown rice) celery onions and chicken broth, they love that as well. However for everyday, it is the Wellness and it is really catching on because it is all natural food, the breeder suggested this food as well and also the Vet, since the Life Abundance I was having shipped in was getting a little too expensive. I have had no problems with the food and they love it, I do not ever buy the food from the grocery stores, I only go to the pet store to obtain the Wellenss food and only Pet Express and Petco carry the brand, Pet Express is the only one that has the wet food New England Vetnesson. I hope that helps, when I have time to cook for them they get home made food like us, they love that as well. Yes, German Shepherds are the best dogs, I have had two in my life that are very special animals, 20 years ago I had one and she was a wonderful dog and companion and now I have Heidi, she is the best, I love her so much and she also loves me, we share a bond and they are super when it comes to training, she listens she obeys and that makes life a lot easier, however, Jan’s book helpped as well. Hi, I like your articles and have been reading your posts for quite some time… I agree about natural feeding, but am a little nervous about total natural (not quite sure I am including everything they need). I do however buy at least 2 times a week ground turkey (it is reasonably priced)for great protine. and feed a high quality chicken & brown rice commercial dog food (not at grocery store). I mix them and they love it. On the times that I do not buy fresh ground turkey, I add to their food a can of Campbell’s Healthy Request-50% less sodium Chicken and Rice to their food and also some probiotics to the concoction and they love it… They have small hard stools which I love and it tells me that they are utilizing everything that is fed to them… I am a breeder and have about 5 GSD’s and 2 of them have allergies… Even though this is my 4th generation of homebred GSD’s and have never, from the start, given anything other than Chicken and Rice with NO corn, wheat, etc., the allergies persist… So I am beginning to think, maybe it is the PINE POLLEN???LOL… Anyway, ever vigilint, Patty

Dunkin is my 5th great German Shepherd and he was a rescued puppy, but now an adult. He is so smart and a great dog, who eats Lifes Abundance mixed with a wet food twice a day. No Beef or Pork per Vet. So I mix canned Fish, Chicken, Venison,Lamb etc. I rotate the canned food daily. We were using Merrick, but that has gotten very liquid, so we are using Natural Choice. He does get Chicken Thighs and brown rice and carrots and celery and garlic, when Chicken thighs are on sale. Dunkin is a huge boy, really tall and long, but very agile even at a weight of 118lbs. Vet says he is in good condition and agrees that the Life’s Abundance is a good choice for the dry dog food.

Years ago when I was working in restaurants, I had a puppy and used to bring home all the scraps that people left on their plates in the restaurant. I was also buying “Puppy Chow” dog food for her. She had more than enough to eat: meat, bread, French fries, rice, potatoes, vegetables, lettuce, etc. She used to pick out all the meat and leave all the potatoes, bread, rice. I had lots of bones too. A squirrel was stealing the bones. When she had lots of food to choose from, she picked out all the meat. When the food wasn’t as plentiful, then they would eat bread, potatoes, etc.

The dogs that I have now like anything I cook, just because I cooked it. When I make ordinary waffles or bread, they want some of it. I used to use bread as treats when I was clicker training them. Sometimes I used popcorn as treats or cheezies.
For $5.00 I can get a big tub of bones and scraps of meat from the local meat packers. I dump it out in the yard for them. It’s cold here most of the year (Canada) so it is like a fridge or freezer most of the year outside to dump meat outside for the dogs.

Hi, I have a GSD that is very fussy and has had allergies. I have had my dogs on Royal Canin German Shepherd Dog food and it is amazing how great the fussy one is now. His coat is great, he does not scratch or bite any more for months. It is a bit expensive but I do not feed him allot, I measure and he really loves it
Best of luck to you. and YES they are the greatest dogs. Have had German Shepherd Dogs all of my life and although mix breeds are great, all dogs are great, I have a special place in my heart for the GSDS

I have a very picky 3 1/2 year old female German Shepherd with food allergies. I have tried EVERYTHING.. I used the duck and potato as well but she grew tired of it very quickly and quit eating it. I finally landed on a diet that works. I’ll be glad to let you know what I have found if you care to email or call me. (713)376-0884.

We have a 31/2 year old German Shepherd , Nikita , that we feed an all natural diet and have since she was about 1 year old. She is healthy, happy and energetic. I wouldn’t feed her any other way. It hasn’t been expensive and takes VERY little time to prepare. We even travel a lot and always take her with us and it’s never been a problem.
Like many others I think German Shepherds are the best dogs ( just about perfect).

  12. Barbara J F Charest says:

Hi Barry, I just read your reply today December 20th
I would love to find out more about what you learned in feeding your GSD. My fussy furkid has started stratching and biting again and I have found information that has rated Royal Canin not that great. I have switched to Chicken Soup for the Soul dog food.
please feel free to email me anytime. I really appreciate any advice you can offer
    Happy Holidays
